The best

(A post from Cecile's Facebook)

I have heard so many stories about the ‘best beer in the world’, brewed by monks at the Saint-Sixtus Abbey.

And unexpectedly, the wonderful Veronica and her husband Willie took us there for a beer!

Veronica is a fellow South African living and working in Belgium. With her fountain of knowledge about history and beer and so forth, and her bubbly and welcoming personality, that is a loss for South Africa! But I am digressing.

I had the Westvleteren 12, a dark beer – and loved it. I vaguely remember getting back to the van and telling Freddie happily that I don’t know what he wants from me or where we are, but it is all wonderful. Interestingly enough I felt fine only a short while later. But this is a seriously good beer with an interesting story.

At the “In de Vrede” cafetaria of the St Sixtus Abbey. With the world famous “bakke” (beer crates) on display as a sculpture.
