Yesterday – on the small ferry to Rozenburg, Roel and I started chatting.
What a big, kind heart this man has!
He found my little journey “heel tof”. couldn’t stop commenting about it, and practically emptied his rucksack insisting that I take the handfuls of fruit, biscuits and a packet of soup with me. Initially he even offered to pay my ferry fare!
Born in Paramaribo, he has been living and working in the Netherlands (in the house moving business) for many years now.
He sometimes goes back to Suriname. To where the heart beats stronger, he says.
He finds it fascinating that I am an “Afrikaan”, that we both hail from way down south, and that both our countries have difficult histories and were colonized by the Dutch.
Roel – ek vind dat echt spesiaal dat jy die eerste twee kilometer na die veerboot aangedring het om saam te stap tot ek weer my roete vind.
Dankie vir die koekjes. Ek’t my rit gister onderskat, en dit het my gered.
Laat ek probeer groet in jou pragtige Matawai : “Go bono, mi matie”
