Vijver

(A post from Cecile’s  Facebook)

Sunset at Zillebeke vijver. Our first kampeerplaats in our campervan.

The place where we had to figure out all the basics on our own. There was only one other campervan, we could choose a stand. Freddie managed to connect the electricity with some laughs, we settled in and I took a walk along the vijver with my camera.

First encounter with the Flanders’ considerateness – the moment you lift your camera, all the other walkers will stop and wait in order not to disturb whatever you are photographing. Astounding. I have some other thoughts about this, for another time.

A man stopped to ask what I was photographing, which led to a conversation. He had to visit South Africa for work, and loving music, he somehow got to know Johannes Kerkorrel (Ralph Rabie) and they wrote to each other for a while. He mentioned his sadness over the suicide, we stood there, staring at the ground. Then he smiled, and walked away.

And I wondered about these fragile threads that connect people in the most unlikely places.
