Who knows?

Daniël hosted Jeremy while we could not be at home

Spending a little time… raising a glass to crossing Africa… on a bicycle.

Jeremy – from Switzerland – is cycling from Cape Town all the way north through the African continent – back to Europe – to his home town, Lousanne.

He was the first Warmshowers-guest at our house this year. He spent the end of his first day resting here, before leaving the next morning towards Citrusdal… and then onwards.

Who knows what he will experience and see while travelling this mighty continent? Who knows what cultures he will come across – the friends he will make? Who knows the depths of loneliness and silences this young man will find in thirsty deserts? Or the unimaginable nature and beauty of forests, waterfalls, grass plains, rivers, searing summer heat, and thunderstorms? And sunrises and sunsets.

Cycling nomads like him that have gone before will have some idea. From what I’ve heard from previous visitors: definitely there will be bad moments… difficult border crossings… dangerous situations… times of sickness… mountains so high and long that most of us could barely walk up. And utter amazement at the goodwill, kindness and generosity of complete strangers when they encounter a bicycle traveller.

Yes. There will be ups and downs. Good times and bad times. Highs and lows. Laughter and crying.

But – it WILL be TREMENDOUS! An experience most of us could only dream of having.

Bon voyage, Jeremy! Wishing you a magical journey.

Know that we, and the normal people you come across, stare at individuals like you in awe… realizing that we could also perhaps be a little more brave and adventurous in our everyday lives.

Packed and ready to roll: start of day 2

We’ll be following you here, and here.
